Employee Relations

The term employee relations refer to the activities and approaches that the employer takes in order to maintain a positive and healthy relation with the employees. Being one of the key result areas of HR this helps to maintain loyalty, positive work culture & also keeps the employees engaged in their work. Ideally the HR department is in control of maintaining this relationship but some organizations may have a dedicated employee relations manager role (Singh, 2010).

In order to maintain this relationship the responsible person/s needs to focus on the company policies, compensation & benefits, work – life balance and etc. In addition, when it comes to employee relations, an HR department has two primary functions. First, HR helps prevent and resolve problems or disputes between employees and management. Second, they assist in creating and enforcing policies that are fair and consistent for everyone in the workplace (Aylott, 2014).

As the employee relation function is all about the employee betterment the below elements discussed are vital for this process to be successful.

Consult on New and Existing Policies

Policies of an organization is the guideline for the employees and enables the employees to act in a certain way. It is important to review the existing policies with employee feedback and also establish new policies in favor of their & the company’s betterment (Farnham, 2000).

Benefits Packages

This refers to the perks the it given to the employees like the leave entitlements, insurance and other benefits that helps employees feel belonged and rewarded. This is a major source of motivation which directly contributes in employee retention.

Negotiation

Negotiation is processing that two parties involve in to come in to a mutual agreement modifying their demands (Anon., 2015). At the stage of recruitment negotiation plays a key role to draw up the contract of employment which agrees on terms and conditions of the job role. Salary, benefits and other components of the employment will be negotiated which will be favorable to the employee relations.

Compliance to the Laws

This element focuses on the company complying with the state and the acts enforced by the government in order to secure the company and employee from any problem or dispute,

Adhering to these elements in employee relations will help the organization to maintain a healthy and positive environment enhancing the relationship between the staff and management.
